Outstanding Community Volunteer for the Town of Hantsport
An interview wih Susan Sypher, April, 2005

Susan Sypher is a stay-at-home mom who has a full time job volunteering for non-profit groups and events in the Hantsport area. Susan has lived in Hants Border for most of her life except for a ten year period when she lived and worked in Halifax. After a decade of city life, she decided that she would go back to the country and raise her family.
Today, Susan contributes to more than twelve non-profit organizations and associated events for the area and still manages to be a mother, a wife, and a homemaker! To give you an idea of how generous this woman is with her time and resources, below is a list of some of Susan’s contributions during the past six years:
- Serves on the Board of Directors for the Hantsport Community Centre (sub-committee)
- Chairs the Pool Committee
- Serves on the Organizing Committee for July 1st Celebrations (Chair)
- Sits on the Board of Directors for the Windsor Bluefins
- Area Chairperson for the Heart and Stroke Foundation
- Organizes Terry Fox Run (past 2 years)
- Hosts a ‘Movie night’ at the Legion (raising money for Community Centre)
- Serves ‘Hotdog lunches’ at the Pool
- Local Sparks group leader
- Participates in the Seniors Christmas Shopping Party Bus Trip
As you can see, Susan extends her generosity to all walks of life. “The biggest reward”, Susan describes, “is knowing that the facilities and programs in the Hantsport area will continue to be maintained and that the children will benefit from this.”
As a Sparks group leader, Susan enjoys working with the children in a program that is designed offer them community support. Susan says it’s very reassuring to know that years after participants leave the program, they still appreciate the time she spent with them. She notes that “nothing can describe the feeling you get when you watch those little sparks grow into adolescents who recognize you six years later and still refer to you as ‘Butterfly’ (Susan’s Sparks leader name.)”
Susan Sypher is a dedicated community volunteer who is deserving of her recent Volunteer of the Year Award. She enjoys giving back to the community and says that projects, programs, facilities and the well-being of the town, benefit greatly because of the commitment demonstrated by local volunteers.
