Hants County is home to a variety of dynamic advanced manufacturing operations. Advanced manufacturers make extensive use of computer, high precision, and information technologies integrated with a high performance workforce in a production system capable of furnishing a diverse mix of products in small or large volumes. This involves both the efficiency of mass production, and the flexibility of custom manufacturing, in order to respond rapidly to customer demands.

Businesses in Hants County’s advanced manufacturing sector include:

  • CKF Inc. of Hantsport employs 225 individuals in the manufacture of paper products from recycled newsprint.
  • Elmsdale Lumber is Hants County’s largest lumber manufacturer, using technology to meet the highest quality of building materials required by quality builders, and exports to U.S. markets.
  • Minas Basin Pulp and Power Company Limited of Hantsport was founded in 1927, and it employs 220 individuals in the manufacture of liner and core board from recycled paper products.
  • Nu-Air Ventilation of Newport is a global exporter of passive heat recovery ventilators.
  • Orion Electronics of Windsor was founded in 1975, and it is a global leader in the development of global positioning system applications and electronics for military and civilian policing purposes. The Company was recently acquired by global aerospace supplier, the Chelton Group.
  • Scotian Homes of Elmsdale was founded in the1950s, and it has grown to become Nova Scotia’s largest manufactured home producer exporting to markets around the globe.
  • Shaw Brick of Lantz was founded in 1861, and it has expanded to become the region’s largest provider of manufactured and resource construction and building materials.
